Further cooperation with Aargau Verkehr AG (AVA)

For Aargau Verkehr AG (AVA), our long-standing customer, we have the pleasure of carrying out another project and equipping the 12 ABe 4/8 vehicles (see picture) with our passenger information system (FIS).

AVA vehicle model type ABe 4/8, originator Aargau Verkehr (AVA)
AVA Revision ABe 4/8 WSB, originator Aargau Verkehr (AVA)
The AVA operates a network of train and bus lines with a total of 6,873,356 kilometres and transports over 20 million passengers per year in the cantons of Aargau, Lucerne and Zurich. With the Wynental and Suhrentalbahn, on which our FIS will be in operation, the number of kilometres travelled per year is 1,522,322 with over 5 million passengers. To ensure that passengers have vehicles with a uniform design and the same level of comfort, AVA is modernising the middle generation of vehicles by 2025 with the Saphir fleet. Passengers will find an improved information and driving experience after the modernisation.

Premiere for FELA PAN server, digital audio amplifier and latest generation thin-film transistor (TFT) monitors

After FELA was able to equip five new Saphir vehicles with a customised FIS for AVA from December 2018 to 2019, the project continues with 12 ABe vehicles.

For this exciting refit project, we are supplying the FIS including the PAN audio system (Phone and Announcement), the train communication system (ZUKO) and video system. As in-house developments, the PAN server, the digital audio amplifier and the latest generation of our thin-film transistor (TFT) monitors are celebrating their premiere in the AVA trains.

The PAN server is the central switching unit in the PAN audio system and connects all audio devices in the train: GSM gateway, train radio system, emergency call stations, passenger information system and digital audio amplifier. Our PAN server handles the switching of digital calls for the various audio use cases: Passenger emergency calls, train driver announcements, station announcements from the passenger information system and the playback of predefined special messages.

To ensure a reliable and interference-free audio system, our digital audio amplifier has a redundant power supply and two redundant audio channels. Each audio channel has its own audio amplifier, which serves two analogue audio outputs, each with 12.5 watts of power. Thus, the system offers four individually controllable audio channels with a total power of 50 watts. The audio signals are streamed digitally to the audio amplifier; in addition, analogue and prioritised announcements can be output via UIC.

The revised TFTs have a computer that can display and play back images and videos in full HD quality on panels in various formats. The computer unit is also equipped with a Trusted Platform Module (TPM 2.0), which protects the system from external software and data manipulation. Reduced hardware parts also lead to lower weight and lower energy requirements, making maintenance more cost-effective for operators such as AVA than with previous generations.

We will start converting the first vehicle in autumn 2023, so that the last vehicle will go back into active operation in spring 2025.

We would like to thank AVA for the renewed order and the long-standing trust! Our team is already in the middle of the project work and is very much looking forward to the renewed cooperation!
